Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airpot has won a prestigious award.

As the airport welcomes a seemingly ever-increasing number of travelers, leaders are keen to ensure that the transportation hub is aligned with environmental sustainability values.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport was crowned one of the winners at the ASEAN Energy Awards 2023. The airport won Best Energy Management in Buildings and Industries in the large building category.

The Main Director of Angkasa Pura I, which is responsible for all operations at the airport, shared the organization’s delight in being recognized for its commitment to energy efficiency.

Faik Fahmi told reporters, “We are very proud and grateful for this achievement. The achievement achieved by Ngurah Rai Airport further confirms that AP1 as an airport management company is fully committed to efforts to preserve the environment through energy conservation.”

This is not the first energy conservation award Ngurah Rai International has won in recent years. In 2022, the airport won the Subroto Award for Energy Efficiency, as awarded by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Fahmi added, “Ngurah Rai Airport is Indonesia’s representative in the award category of the ASEAN Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Awards. This is a positive note for AP I as the airport manager.”

The airport is focused on balancing energy efficiently and traveler experience. Tourists have noted that there are a series of energy-efficient resources available to them throughout the airport.

This includes photoelectric sensors of escalators and travelators within each terminal, as well as eco-friendly lighting.

Fahmi added, “there is also the use of a clean water distribution monitoring system, the use of LED lights in the passenger terminal and airside areas, and the use of solar street lights in pedestrian areas at the airport.”

The use of solar and renewable energy resources at Bali Airport has enabled Ngurah Rai to successfully save 26,592 MWh of wasted energy or the equivalent of saving electricity costs of Rp. 27.8 billion in the 2020 to 2022 observation period.

Fahmi concluded, “In addition to successfully implementing energy savings, Ngurah Rai Airport has also succeeded in recording a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 21,008 metric tons of CO2.”

These energy efficiency measure helps reduce the running costs of their airport. Something that the government is keen to ensure happens across the board.

The government is in the process of merging three of the state-owned airlines to help reduce logistical costs.

This is a move that many have hoped will help reduce flight costs for tourists to Bali, but some aviation experts are concerned it’ll take a long time for tourists to feel any economic benefit from the merger.

The Indonesian government is in the process of merging Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, and Pelita Air.

At the moment, the merge will only impact business operations behind the scenes, and passengers will not notice any difference in their experience traveling with either of the three airlines.

Both Citilink and Garuda Indonesia have recently expanded their international flight services to and from Bali to keep up with soaring demand for travel to the island. Bali has, for decades, been the destination of choice for holidaymakers from Australia.

This year has proven no exception, and Australian travelers are still the most frequent international arrivals in Bali, followed by tourists from China and India.

With this in mind, both Citilink and Garuda Indonesia have added more flights between Bali and Australia for the rest of the year and into 2024.

Citilink is now flying daily between Perth and Bali.

Garuda Indonesia is now flying four times weekly between Ngurah Rai International and Sydney and two weekly between Melbourne and Bali.
